Long Sword
This is a long sword. The longsword is a European Sword that has a two handed grip that is around 6-11 inches. It's straight two edged blade can be 33-43 inches. The long sword was used during the 13th-17th centuries which are medieval times. The longsword was a quick, effective, and versatile weapon capable of deadly thrusts, slices, and cuts. There is a type of manner called half swording which is when the long sword holder keeps one hand on the hilt and one hand on the blade. This helped the holder better control trusts and jabs. |
Morning Star
This is a morning star. The morning star is a mace used for melee (close range) combat. This mace usually with a spike extending straight from the top and many smaller spikes around the particle of the head was used somewhere around the beginning of the 14th century. The club with a ball surrounded by spikes is not the only design for the morning star. If fact there is a type of mace that is similar to the morning star but the spiked ball is separated from the club by a chain that gives the weapon more swing. |
CrossBow
The cross bow is a weapon based on the bow and has a horizontal (sideways) bow like front. This weapon shoots projectiles or arrows called bolts or quarrels. The crossbow played a significant role in wars in East Asia, Europe and the Mediterranean. Crossbows help the archers shoot further than bows even thought they take longer to reload. After crossbowmen shoot, they are vulnerable to bow men and ground troops and usual crossbowmen have no armor. Crossbow strings were typically made of strong fibers that would not bust when winded up. |
Katana
The Katana is a Japanese sword that was used during the Muromachi period (1392-1573) which is in between the middle ages (500-1500). Katanas would have a curved blade and only one edge with a two handed grip. Katanas were used for some martial arts to train samurais and even in the modern day the Katana is used for martial arts and also movies. |
Ballista
The early ballista in Ancient Greece was developed from two weapons called oxybeles and gastraphetes. Gastraphetes was a hand held crossbow. Oxybeles was a weapon similar to the ballista and was held by a tripod just like the ballista. The ballista was a siege weapon. Sometimes ballistas were inside mobile armored towers. The ballista could easily be modified to shoot spherical and shaft proctiles. It helped defenders take out small groups of ground troops and small buildings and would sometimes set the projectiles on fire to increase damage. |
Rapier
The rapier is a sharply pointed sword mainly used for thrust attacks. This sword was originally made and used in Spain and was desinged around the 1500's. The odd looking patterns of steel surrounding the hilt are used for protection of the wielder's hand. The Rapier was know as espada ropera in Spain. The sword was used by civilians for self protection and dueling. |
